Internet Yellow Pages

Internet Yellow PagesSometime in August 1994. I made a scientific writing (penulisan ilmiah?) about my field work (kerja praktek) at Ipteknet, BPPT. And once I passed examination, a compulsory book donation to the library is in order.

While other students gave cheap second-hand books to the library, with pride (and a hint of superiority) I gave my Internet Yellow Pages book to the library. It contain thousands of website links, grouped by category and no less than 500 pages thick… It was way beyond its time. Coz I remember the first ISP (Indonet) was soft-launched during the same time. Web community in Indonesia at that time was practically non-existent and the infamous Yahoo! was still hosted on yahoo.stanford.edu.

Now… I think… If the library still has it, it would be the most rotten book they have to date. I mean, who needs an Internet Yellow Pages book these days? I can’t imagine how much rain forest trees has to chopped in order to keep-up with the annual increase of website address, let alone url changes. Who needs web directory? Google rules!

Hahaha… I laughed so hard reading this. Brings back memories too.

But now with junk websites, I think a yellowpage could become useful again. Actually there’s such things now - dmoz.org for example. So, no dead trees :)

It doesn’t really bring back *my* old memories since I never read that book in the first place. :P

Nevertheless, I agree on one thing: who needs such directory book now. :P

Does it have the URL to my “Indonesian Homepage”? ha ha ha. Those were the days! Actually, I am more interested in O’Reilly’s book the whole world catalog thing (forgot the exact name of the book). It was the first of such catalog.

I still think that that book is an artifact that we should collect and preserve. It’s part of our history, just like the writing on cave wall or tablets. I guess we never care of such thing, eh?

Are you positive it was 2004, Mr. Brillianto? That’s just 4 years ago. I’m quite positive yahoo used its own domain back then. :)

If you meant 1994 then all would be different. The Net was still in its infancy back then. I remembered connecting to the Internet through Pusdata Deprin through the agonizingly slow SLIP connection. *the good old times*

Internet Yellow Pages don’t make much sense, no. I mean, who needs (Business) Yellow Pages at all these days?!
